Bishop Gregory with Revd James Harris

Deanery of Alyn inaugurated at Candlemas

An historic service took place in Gwersyllt on Sunday 5 February to mark the merger of two Deaneries.

More than 150 people attended Candlemas at Holy Trinity Church as the Deanery of Gresford and the Deanery of Minera became the brand new Deanery of Alyn.

The merger will mean the new Deanery will have six full time Clergy instead of three each and will allow the churches in the former Gresford and Minera Deaneries to work more closely together.

Bishop Gregory officially inaugurated the new Deanery and licensed the Revd James Harris (pictured with the Bishop) as Area Dean. He also commissioned new Pastoral Assistants for the Deanery.

The congregation shared the Eucharist before Revd Canon Sue Huyton lit a candle to mark the inauguration of the Deanery of Alyn. The light from this candle was then passed to the congregation’s individual candles.

In his sermon, Bishop Gregory outlined the importance of working together in the new Deanery to show Christ in “likely and unlikely” places.

He added:

“Today we say goodbye to the Area Deaneries of Gresford and Minera and instead welcome the new Deanery of Alyn.

“This change will only make sense if you see the opportunity to grow into what Christ wants you to become. These Deaneries are different – but rejoice in that difference and look at the way Jesus is at work.”
