A brief outline of the history of the parish

St Cadoc's Church began life as a private chapel to the Williams family, Aberpergwm, which came under the 'mother church' and authority of the Vicar at Cadoxton, lower in the Neath Valley. From 1861, the Williams family became patron to the church as well as having responsibility for contributing to the church income, patronage meant that the Williams family could influence the choosing of the minister. The first vicar was Revd. John George, marking the start of the independent parish of Aberpergwm. When the Church of England was disestablished in Wales after the First World War, and the Church in Wales was formed, the church was transferred from the Williams family over to the Anglican Church. Whilst St Cadoc's was on the old boundary of the Cistercian monastery of Neath, in contrast, St Mary's Blaengwrach was in the district of the Cistercian monastery of Margam. Thus despite the close proximity, the 'Church community' of Cwmgwrach did not associate with St Cadocs, but over the mountain to the parish of Glyn Corrwg in the Afan Valley, connected by long windy tracks in the forest. Afan Valley. Around 1605, local land owner, Gerorge Williams petitioned Bishop William Morgan at Llandaff to permit construction of a church in the village to relieve the people from walking such a distance over the mountain to church. When St David's Church was built in 1850 it too was part of the parish of Glyncorrwg along with Blaengwrach. But Resolven became an independent parish towards the end of the nineteenth century, later to be linked with the parish of Tonna. In the early twentieth century the Vicar at St Cadoc's had oversight of Mary's and in 1940 the two churches were incorporated into the new parish of Aberpergwm with Blaengwrach. In 2004, the new parish of the Vale of Neath was created from all three areas, comprising our mission to witness to the people of the upper Neath Valley communities. There used to be another church in Resolven parish based at Rheola (near the site currently used for a large Saturday indoor markect where we offer prayer ministry), but it was closed many years ago and sadly, is now ruined.
